It’s been a tough start to the 2020 season for Kevin Newman, who entered Thursday batting just .167 with almost as many strikeouts as hits.

Yet when it comes to clutch situations, the former Arizona Wildcats star still has a flair for the dramatic.

Newman’s pinch-hit two-run single through a drawn-in infield gave the Pittsburgh Pirates a 6-5 home win over the Minnesota Twins, ending Minnesota’s six-game win streak and giving Pittsburgh just its third victory in 13 games this season.

It marked the fifth time in the past two seasons that Newman, who played at the UA from 2013-15 before getting taken by the Pirates in the first round of the 2015 MLB Draft, has ended a game with a hit.

The 27-year-old Newman is a career .263 hitter in the majors, including .306 in 2019, with 13 home runs and 74 RBI.
