ASU president Michael Crow: Territorial Cup likely to be moved to end of season

When the Pac-12 released its revised 2020 football schedule last week, limiting each school to 10 conference games, the biggest headline for the Arizona Wildcats was who they would open with.

Arizona is set to open Sept. 26 at home against rival ASU, marking the earliest the Territorial Cup would ever be played in a season. That game is almost exclusively the last one on the schedule, usually held the Friday or Saturday after Thanksgiving, get league officials opted to put it first with the idea that it could be moved to a later date if needed.

ASU school president Michael Crow seems to think that’s the direction the game is headed.

“We’re just hopeful that there will be an opportunity to have a season,” Crow said Monday on The Mike Broomhead Show on Phoenix radio station KTAR. “If we can’t hold the game on that weekend then it gets moved to the end of the season. Looking at things the way they look right now, that’s more probably than actually playing on that day.”

By “end of the season” Crow is referring to Dec. 12, an open date for all Pac-12 schools between the final regular-season games and the conference title game, which will be held either Dec. 18 or 19 and moves from Las Vegas to the stadium of the highest seed.

Arizona and ASU also share a common off date, Oct. 17, where the game could be played if one or the other team isn’t ready to start on Sept. 26, a very plausible scenario considering the state continues to see a high number of coronavirus cases.
