Arizona volleyball hires Matt Dyck as new assistant coach

The Arizona Wildcats have hired Matt Dyck as their new assistant coach, it was announced Monday. He replaces Gregg Whitis, who stepped down in April after seven seasons with the program.

Dyck attended the UA from 2001-2005, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in history. He was once a manager for the volleyball team and sister Amy was a setter for the Wildcats from 2004-07. Their father Jack was a volunteer assistant in 2014.

Here is pertinent info about Dyck from the UA press release:

• Dyck has served as a head coach/college recruiting coordinator/camp director for Zona Volleyball for 16 years in addition to very successful stints leading the Arizona men’s volleyball club team, Arizona Premier Volleyball and the Arizona High Performance Team for USA Volleyball. Dyck also has collegiate volleyball experience, serving as the head coach of Central Arizona College (2011-14) and first assistant of Eastern Washington University (2015-16).
• As the director of Arizona Premier Volleyball, Dyck led his 18-1 team to a perfect 33-0 record in the Arizona Region of USA Volleyball season, winning back-to-back region titles in 2007 and 2011. From 2010 to 2013, he led the team to a pair of silver medals and one bronze medal on the national level in the USAV Junior National CLUB Division. The club produced nine All-Americans and several collegiate athletes.
• In addition to his coaching duties with Zona Volleyball Club, Dyck also served as the Recruiting Coordinator, helping manage college recruitment processes for competitive players.
• From 2008-10, Dyck was the head coach of the University of Arizona men’s volleyball club team, leading the team to a No. 3 national ranking in 2008. Dyck then spent time as the head coach of the Arizona High Performance Teams for USA Volleyball, finishing fifth in the USA Volleyball High Performance World Championship in 2011 and 2012.
• On the collegiate level, Dyck was hired to reinstate volleyball at Central Arizona College, where he served as the head coach from 2011-15. Dyck built the program into one of best in the conference, earning ACCAC Coach of the Year in 2013.
• From 2015 to 2016, Dyck served as an assistant coach at Eastern Washington, where he helped turn around the program. In year 1, the Eagles saw a five-win improvement; overall in his two seasons, the team was over .500 after a 20-41 two-year record the pair of seasons prior to his arrival.

Head coach Dave Rubio’s reaction: “I am excited to announce that Matt Dyck has accepted the assistant volleyball coach position at the University of Arizona. Matt received his undergraduate degree at UA. He also spent four years as the volleyball manager, along with coaching the men’s club team at Arizona. His experience building the Central Arizona volleyball program and the time he spent at Eastern Washington along with his years as a club coach with the Zona Volleyball Club has put him in a position to excel at his new role in the Arizona volleyball program.”
