The 2020 college baseball season got cut short by the coronavirus pandemic, coming to a halt in mid-March just as the Arizona Wildcats were about to open Pac-12 Conference play. But several players with ties to the UA program are doing their best to get their swings in during the extended offseason in various summer leagues.

A trio of Wildcats are playing in the San Diego League, an analytics-based league that is in its second year of operation, and all three have earned spots in Friday’s All-Star Game at Petco Park, home of the San Diego Padres.

Outfielder Mac Bingham and infielder Dayton Dooney are on Team Land, while incoming freshman outfielder Kyle Casper is on Team Sea. The game is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. PT and is being streamed live at thesandiegoleague.com.

Bingham, who is coming off an abbreviated 2020 campaign in which he hit .361 with a .978 OPS to earn Freshman All-America honors, is batting .276 with five RBI in 11 games for the Jets.

Dooney, who struggled as a sophomore after a Freshman All-American performance in 2019, is batting .368 with two homers and 11 RBI for the Brewers. And Casper, part of Arizona’s 2020 recruiting class that’s ranked No. 8 by Baseball America, is hitting .300 for the Sharks.

Worth noting is that Dooney isn’t listed as being with Arizona on the league website, instead identified as representing Central Arizona College in Coolidge. UA officials declined to comment on Dooney’s status with the program, though a source indicated he is not in the NCAA transfer portal.
