Scott Kingery, Bobby Dalbec test positive for coronavirus, Kevin Ginkel reports to Diamondbacks camp

A dozen former Arizona Wildcats baseball players were invited to Major League Baseball’s “summer” spring training camps last month, yet three of the more notable guys on the list had been conspicuously absent from early workouts.

One has since made his camp debut, while the reason for the others’ absences have been confirmed.

Third baseman Bobby Dalbec has tested positive for the coronavirus, per manager Ron Roenicke. Roenicke told reporters that Dalbec, a fourth-round pick of the Boston Red Sox in the 2016 MLB Draft who is on Boston’s 60-man player pool for the 2020 season, is asymptomatic but must have a negative test before he can participate in workouts.

The 25-year-old Dalbec, who has yet to make his Major League debut, hit .239 with 27 home runs and 73 RBI in 135 games split between Double- and Triple-A last season. In four minor league seasons he has 79 homers and 256 RBI.

Infielder/outfielder Scott Kingery has yet to make it to camp with the Philadelphia Phillies while awaiting a negative test result. He told Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports that he tested positive in mid-June after dealing with a fever, severe body aches and a lost of smell but has since fully recovered.

The 26-year-old Kingery was a second-round pick of the Phillies in the 2015 draft. He made his big-league debut in 2018 and has hit .242 with 27 homers and 90 RBI in two seasons in the majors.

Reliever Kevin Ginkel, who made his MLB debut for the Arizona Diamondbacks last season, missed his team’s first two days of camp but was “cleared” to play Monday according to Michael McDermott of AZSnakePit. No details were provided on why Ginkel was absent for the first two days.

Ginkel, 26, was a 22nd-round selection of the D’Backs in the 2016 draft. He joined the big league club last August and appeared in 25 games out of the bullpen, going 2-1 with a save while posting a 3.55 ERA and 31 strikeouts in 25.1 innings.

Both Dalbec and Ginkel were members of the UA’s 2016 squad that reached the College World Series championship series. Dalbec, who was Arizona’s closer for most of the season, started five games in the postseason and went 3-2 with a 1.49 ERA while also hitting .297 at the plate, while Ginkel was 2-0 in six appearances including a 7-inning, 10-strikeout start in Game 2 of the championship series against Coastal Carolina.

Kingery played at the UA from 2013-15, hitting .392 in 2015 en route to Pac-12 Player of the Year honors.
