Ex-Arizona target Jason Harris sticking with Colorado despite coaching change

He has lots of family ties to the UA

When Mel Tucker left the Colorado Buffaloes to be the new head coach at Michigan State, some Arizona Wildcats fans wondered if that meant they had another shot at landing Jason Harris.

After all, the four-star defensive end picked Colorado over Arizona despite his brother Jalen playing for the Wildcats and both his parents being graduates of the UA.

It’s time to end that pipe dream.

Harris recently told BuffZone.com that he is “all in” on CU, though he did acknowledge that Tucker’s departure caused him to rethink his commitment. While Harris already signed a National Letter of Intent, recruits typically are able to get a release amid a coaching change.

“In that situation, you don’t know what type of coach they’re bringing in, what type of defense that new coach is planning on running,” Harris told BuffZone. “At the end of the day, it’s like ‘Wow!’ But in moments like those, you just have to stay calm and know that God has a plan for you, no matter what.”

Harris said it helped that new head coach Karl Dorrell retained four defensive coaches.

“You want to go there and be familiar with the people that you’re going to be coached by,” Harris told BuffZone. “I don’t think much is changing on the defense, but it definitely means a lot (to have them staying). I want to feel comfortable.”

Harris was a big miss for the Wildcats. Not just because he was a legacy recruit but also because he was an in-state prospect and would have filled an area of need.

Harris is regarded as one of the top pass rushers in Arizona. He racked up 24 sacks in his senior season at Gilbert’s Higley High School, and could have made an immediate impact for the Wildcats, who compiled just 15 sacks in 2019, the fewest in the Pac-12. (Colorado was 11th with 22.)

Harris is the No. 289 recruit in the 2020 class, per 247Sports composite rankings, almost 400 spots higher than Arizona’s top-ranked signee, running back Frank Brown.
