Arizona baseball falls to Iowa in Tony Gwynn Legacy

UA’s second loss to a Big Ten team

The Big Ten has Arizona baseball’s number so far.

The Wildcats were defeated 4-1 by the Iowa Hawkeyes on Saturday at the Tony Gwynn Legacy in San Diego, their second loss of the season, both coming against Big Ten teams.

Arizona (4-2) lost to Minnesota on Monday in Tempe.

The Wildcats’ bats were quiet against Iowa (3-2), managing just four hits and three walks.

Sophomore Quinn Flanagan got the start and struggled early, surrendering a two-run homer in the second and an RBI single and groundout in the third. The score remained 4-0 until the seventh when Mac Bingham plated Ryan Holgate with an RBI groundout.

Tyler Casagrande lined out to end the frame, stranding Blake Paugh and Jacob Blas in scoring position.

Arizona’s bullpen was strong for the second straight day, with four pitchers combining to throw 3.1 scoreless innings with seven strikeouts. Freshman Dawson Netz faced four batters and got three strikeouts. Senior Preston Price faced three batters and fanned two.

The Wildcats wrap up the Tony Gwynn Classic on Sunday against Nebraska, another Big Ten team, at 11 a.m. MST.
