Andre Iguodala seeking buyout from Grizzlies, but Memphis wants him at training camp

The 2019-20 season might be Andre Iguodala’s last go-around in the NBA, and he apparently does not want to spend it toiling away with the Memphis Grizzlies.

Iguodala is reportedly seeking a buyout, though the Grizzlies want him to report to training camp, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic.

Iguodala is in the final year of a three-year, $48 million contract. Memphis acquired the former Arizona Wildcat this summer when the Golden State Warriors needed to clear cap space to complete a sign-and-trade for D’Angelo Russell.

Iguodala, 35, was instrumental in the Warriors reaching five straight NBA Finals and still has enough in the tank to help a contender, especially on defense.

Memphis is not a contender, having gone 33-49 last season before trading longtime point guard Mike Conley to the Utah Jazz.

What might not be a coincidence is Charania’s report came out the same day the Los Angeles Lakers reportedly applied for a disabled player exception in the wake of DeMarcus Cousins’ ACL injury. If the Lakers receive the exception, they would be able to pay Iguodala more than the league minimum. Needless to say, he would be a solid fit alongside LeBron James and Anthony Davis.

But Iguodala would need to convince Memphis to release him in order to link up with the Lakers. From the Grizzlies’ perspective, a trade makes more sense than a buyout.
