Arizona freshman WR Boobie Curry is ‘nicked up’, has yet to play in 2019

Despite being listed as a co-starter, freshman wide receiver Boobie Curry has not played in the Arizona Wildcats’ first two games of 2019.

Head coach Kevin Sumlin said Monday that the former four-star recruit is “nicked up”, though the nature and severity of the injury was not disclosed because Sumlin does not discuss those things.

However, it sounds like Sumlin expects Curry to return this season and boost an inexperienced wide receiving corps that has been pretty solid so far, albeit in a limited sample size.

“We didn’t really know what we had coming into this year,” Sumlin said. “We lost four guys. Cedric (Peterson) was probably the only guy that had played significantly, him and Stanley (Berryhill III). I think those two have done a nice job with being consistent and being leaders. Obviously the addition of Tayvian (Cunningham), this guy can run. He’s getting better by the week, getting more confident by the week. That’s been a really good addition. Boobie Curry has not played—he’s been injured, nicked up a little bit—which will add to our depth. I thought Drew Dixon did a nice job Saturday night. We’re still maybe one or two guys short, but when Boobie comes back and gets going and we get Tre Adams going, get some of these other guys going we’ll have the depth and speed to be a good group.”

Curry might be the most talented player in the bunch. In just 17 games at St. Pius X, the 6-foot-2 receiver hauled in 153 passes for 1,946 yards and 21 touchdowns. However, staying healthy seems to be a recurring problem, as he only played in five games as a senior.

The Wildcats could opt to redshirt Curry if they do not think he will be able to contribute in more than four games (the maximum allowed for redshirting players) or if they believe an extra year of eligibility is more valuable than him playing, say, six or seven games this season.

There is no date by which Arizona has to make that decision, so it will be something to watch as the year goes along.
