Former Arizona commit Terry Armstrong signs with NBL’s South East Melbourne Phoenix

Former Arizona Wildcats commit Terry Armstrong has signed with the South East Melbourne Phoenix in Australia’s National Basketball League, it was announced Friday.

A few weeks ago Armstrong made it known that he would be skipping college in order to play professionally.

Some believed that decision was made for academic reasons rather than financial reasons, but Bella Vista Prep athletic director Don Brown seemed to put that rumor to bed by saying all of its program’s graduates left in good academic standing.

A four-star recruit, the 6-foot-6 Armstrong is ranked as the No. 60 player in the 2019 class, per 247Sports composite rankings. He was expected to come off the bench for Arizona in 2019-20 and then take on a bigger role in later years.

The 2019-20 season is the Phoenix’s first in the NBL.

“I love what I am hearing about his personality and work ethic,” Phoenix head coach Simon Mitchell said (via FOX Sports). “I love that he is from Flint, a tough working-class town. He will be at home in South East Melbourne.”

Two other 2020 NBA Draft prospects—LaMelo Ball and R.J. Hampton—signed in Australia this summer, as the NBL is making an effort to be a pipeline for high school kids who do not want to go the college route.
