Arizona assistant coach April Phillips hired away by Cal

Phillips is the second assistant to leave Adia Barnes’ staff

Another day, another member of the Arizona women’s basketball coaching staff heading elsewhere.

UA assistant coach/recruiting coordinator April Phillips has been named an assistant at Cal, the school announced Thursday.

“April is considered one of the best recruiters on the west coast, if not the country,” said Cal coach Lindsay Gottlieb. “But more importantly to me, she is extremely bright and she sees the bigger picture of collegiate athletics. She’s focused on mentoring and guiding student-athletes the right way, and truly values development and growth. I see her as someone who is going to be the face and future of women’s college basketball for years to come. It’s really exciting to have her as part of our program and to see what we can do together.”

A Long Beach, California native, Phillips joined the Wildcats prior to the 2018-19 season after stints at Loyola Marymount, the University of New Haven and Seton Hall. She had a $110,000 salary in 2018-19, per UA records.

The news of her departure comes a day after now-former UA assistant Morgan Valley was hired as the new head coach at Hartford.

So while the Wildcats are set to return their entire starting five in 2019-20, Adia Barnes’ coaching staff will have at least a couple new faces.
