Analyzing new Arizona commit Khary Crump

Let’s take a dive into the Wildcats’ second 2020 pledge

The Arizona Wildcats have landed their second public commitment of the 2020 recruiting class in Culver City (Calif.) defensive back Khary Crump.

Height/Weight: 5-foot-10.5, 175 pounds

School/Hometown: Culver City High School (Culver City, Calif.)

Offers: Oregon, Utah State

2018 Stats: 66 tackles (5 for loss), 4 interceptions, 6 pass breakups, 3 forced fumbles, 1 fumble recovery

Rankings: No. 1,360th overall, No. 115 cornerback, No. 121 player in California

Brandon Combs: This is a really solid player to start the defensive side of Arizona’s 2020 class. Sitting around 5-foot-11 and 175 pounds, he plays bigger than he is, and he does it in an effective way.

He is probably one of the best cover corners I’ve see in a minute. Flipping on his film and watching a couple of minutes, you can see that he has great awareness. In almost every instance he has his head turned looking for the ball. Once he finds it he does what he does best, makes a play on it. Whether that’s making the pick or knocking the ball away, he gets it done.

His physicality, however, is what stands out to me the most. This is where he plays bigger than he is. He plays the press really well and does a great job jamming the receiver at the line, immediately disrupting the flow of the play. He can also lay out a player and is a heavy hitter for his size.

The future of the cornerback group is bright. Lorenzo Burns has one more season of eligibility after this year as does Troy Young. Throw in McKenzie Barnes, Bobby Wolfe, Christian Roland-Wallace, Maurice Gaines, and now Crump and you have a really strong group for coach Demetrice Martin to work with.

Gabe Encinas: It’s been a few months since we saw a commitment and I think this is a good piece to start back up with. For his size I think Crump is a really strong press corner that plays with some great physicality. He has some good foot and quickness to his game as well.

He currently holds offers to Oregon and Utah State, which is nice to see. Crump received both his Arizona and Oregon offers on the same day, as Martin and former Arizona staffer Donte Williams were at the satellite camp he attended last year.

I’m not blown away by the film, but I think it’s a good pickup to work with, given the young, rebuilding position group right now. The ranking around 1300 seems appropriate but I don’t think he has a load of potential to jump the rankings. I do think he can make a good leap in his senior year and command the attention of other Pac-12 schools.

Martin did some really good work last season patching together the position and recruiting some good talent in the 2019 class, so I’m interested to see what he can do with Crump.
