Arizona’s JJ Taylor earns Pac-12 first-team All-Conference honors

Another indication that the 2018 season didn’t go well for the Arizona Wilcats: only one player made the Pac-12’s All-Conference team.

But that one pick was a good one. Redshirt sophomore running back JJ Taylor, who finished second in the conference with 1,434 yards, was named to the first team alongside Pac-12 rushing leader Eno Benjamin of Arizona State.

Taylor is Arizona’s first first-team selection since Scooby Wright in 2014 and the last offensive Wildcat since Ka’Deem Carey in 2012 and 2013.

No other Wildcats were included on the first or second team for offensive, defense or special teams.

Four others did get honorable mention nods: junior defensive lineman PJ Johnson, senior wide receiver Shawn Poindexter, sophomore linebacker Colin Schooler and sophomore Thomas Reid III, who was honored for his special teams play.

Schooler somehow wasn’t one of the six LBs picked for first- and second-team despite finishing second in the Pac-12 with 21.5 tackles for loss, nor was Poindexter among the four wideouts selected despite finishing second in the league with 11 touchdown catches.

Arizona’s one selection is not the fewest, however. Oregon State, which went 1-8 in league play, didn’t get a player on the All-Conference team but did have four honorable mentions.

The solo pick comes a day after the Wildcats failed to land any players on Pro Football Focus’ All-Pac-12 team.
