How Arizona’s commits performed in Week 7

Let’s take a look at how the future Wildcats performed

The future of the Arizona Wildcats’ program was in full swing this weekend, with every commit playing.

One player, Grant Gunnell, played his game on national television and showed what he could do in the face of adversity.

Let’s take a look at how the other players performed.

Grant Gunnell, QB, St. Pius X

Result/Score: Home win against Bishop Dunne, 17-7

School Record: 5-1 (0-0)

Game Stats: 22-for-37, 211 yds, 2 TD, 0 INT; 14 car, 8 yds, 0 TD

Season Stats: 164-for-244, 2423 yds, 27 TD, 2 INT; 50 car, 277 yds, 5 TD

Game Notes: This wasn’t the statistically-crazy game that Gunnell usually has, but that isn’t necessarily his fault. The SPX line was pourous all night against Bishop Dunne, causing Gunnell to be on the move constantly. However, Gunnell made the most out of what was given to him. He still showed off great accuracy and athleticism. He was able to move around the pocket and avoid pressure fluidly and make plays. He did get sacked but overall showed toughness.

Kwabena Watson, DE/OLB, Edison

Result/Score: Away victory over Madera, 62-48

School Record: 4-3 (2-0)

Game Stats: Unknown

Season Stats: Unknown tackles, 17.0 TFL, 10.0 sacks (confirmed)

Game Notes: I was unable to find any clips or stats for Watson.

Maurice Gaines Jr., CB, St. Thomas More

Result/Score: Home victory against Life Christian Academy, 30-8

Season Stats: 3 tackles, 1 INT, 1 PBU (Unconfirmed, based off clips)

Game Notes: Gaines showed what the Arizona coaches love about him. He made a great read and timed his jump just right to come down with the interception on one of his plays. Another, he stuck with the receiver downfield and smacked the ball away. That’s the type of playmaking ability that Gaines can really bring to Tucson.

Jalen Johnson, WR, Eleanor Roosevelt

Result/Score: Away victory against King, 42-17

School Record: 5-2 (2-0)

Game Stats: 2 rec, 63 yds, 1 TD (Unconfirmed, based off posts/clips)

Season Stats: 20 rec, 410 yds, 4 TD (Confirmed from Maxpreps)

Game Notes: There isn’t much on Johnson’s performance against King, but what I could find impresses. He did catch one pass for five yards, however, that’s not the impressive part. Below is an impressive 50+-yard touchdown on a screen pass. Johnson shows off his speed and big play making ability for sure.

Kane Bradford, DT, Skyline

Result/Score: Home loss to Duncanville, 63-6

School Record: 2-2 (1-1)

Game Stats: 1 tackle, 1.0 TFL (Unconfirmed, based off clips)

Season Stats: 9 tackles, 5.5 TFL, 1.0 sack (Unconfirmed, based off clips)

Game Notes: The game didn’t go as Skyline would’ve hoped, losing badly to Duncanville. Bradford didn’t have much film, but the clip he does have is pretty impressive. Bradford continues to violently use his hands to shed blocks and get to the ball carrier. In the below clip, he easily sheds his block and takes the down QB for a big loss. He also shows off his eye discipline as he wasn’t fooled by the fake jet sweep.

Chris Roland, DB, William Knight

Result/Score: Home victory against Eastside, 35-14

School Record: 6-1 (4-0)

Game Stats: 4 tackles and 1 INT; 9 rec, 86 yds, 2 TD

Season Stats: 32 tackles, 2.0 TFL, 5 INT, 2 PBU, 1 forced fumble; 43 rec, 707 yds, 9 TD

Game Notes: Roland continues to show his physicality week in, week out. He loves to hit people and it shows with his solid tackling. He also shows off his crazy athleticism every week. Whether it’s on punt returns, acrobatic catches in the back of the end zone, or interception returns, Roland is the best athlete on the field. As I stated last week, he is really fun to watch.

Derrion Clark, LB, South Oak Cliff

Result/Score: Home victory against Adamson, 63-0

School Record: 4-1 (2-0)

Game Notes: I was unable to find any clips or stats of Clark in SOC’s homecoming shellacking of Adamson.

Michael Wiley, RB, Strake Jesuit

Result/Score: Away victory against Alief Elsik, 41-21

Game Notes: Wiley had another solid game overall for Strake Jesuit as they took down Alief Elsik. Below is a clip of Wiley’s 49-yard reception during the game. He looks like he isn’t really trying but still outruns the majority of the defense. Really interesting to watch.

Jordan Morgan, OT, Marana

Result/Score: Away victory against Ironwood Ridge, 20-13

Game Notes: Marana got back on track against IRHS on Friday. Morgan and the offensive line allowed the Tigers to gain 182 yards on 49 carries and a score on their way to their first conference win of the season.

Game Notes: Desert Vista won the Tukee Bowl against Mountain Pointe 28-27. Ostendorp’s average dropped over the last two games but seemed to impress this weekend.
