Wildcat Wrap: Josh Green commits, football beats Cal, soccer and volleyball get swept

Big week for basketball and football. Not so much for the other sports.

It’s Monday, so let’s get all you Arizona Wildcats fans caught up with all the action that happened last week.

As always, let us know in the comments if we missed anything.

Soccer

• The Wildcats were swept by the L.A. schools, losing to No. 3 USC and No. 15 UCLA by a score of 2-0, falling to 8-4-1 overall and 1-3-1 in the Pac-12. That’s the bad news. The good news is the hardest part of Arizona’s schedule is behind them, and they will have plenty of opportunities to climb the Pac-12 standings, starting this Saturday at home vs. Cal.
• Even still, the Wildcats are 22nd in RPI, meaning they are in good shape to make the postseason. Some of those early wins against Baylor, UC Irvine and Boise State proved to be big.
• Women’s soccer analyst Chris Henderson has UA goalkeeper Lainey Burdett as his No. 49 prospect in the 2019 NWSL Draft. The senior is Arizona’s all-time shutouts leader and has the fourth-highest save percentage in the Pac-12 (.828).

Volleyball

• It was a rough weekend for the ‘Cats as they were swept by the Washington schools.
• UA (14-4, 3-3 Pac-12) was swept 3-0 on Friday by No. 15 Washington. It was the first time the team had been swept in a match all season and the first loss at home.
• On Sunday, it looked as though the Wildcats would split the weekend, but No. 22 Washington State battled back to force a fifth set, which they won 15-13.
• UA is California dreaming this weekend as the team heads to Southern California to play USC and UCLA.

Women’s Golf

• Junior Sandra Nordaas had a career-best finish as she shot a final round 70 (-2) to finish 3-under on the week to end the event tied for third.
• The 15th ranked Wildcats finished third at the Windy City Classic on Tuesday.
• UA ended the two-day event seven shots back of winner USC.
• The defending national champions will be trick or treating and playing golf in Atlanta for the East Lake Cup event that runs from Oct. 30-Nov. 1.

Men’s Golf

• Sophomore Trevor Werbylo was the top Wildcat at NCI in Fort Worth, Texas, as he placed 38th. He shot a 219 (+9) for the tournament. UA placed 15th. The ‘Cats head to Arkansas on Oct. 22 for the Little Rock Invitational.

Men’s Tennis

• Sophomore Filip Malbasic finished the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma with a record 6-1, while junior Alejandro Reguant finished 0-2.
• Head coach Clancy Shields landed one of the top-50 players in the world with commit of Jonas Eriksson. Eriksson, from Solna, Sweden, is one of the top-50 junior players in the world. He is set to take the court for UA in January.

Women’s Tennis

• Senior Emma Wilson ended her time at the ITA All-American Championship with a loss to Florida’s Victoria Emma. Wilson went 4-2 at the event with another top-100 win, her third of the year.

Baseball

• The Wildcats got some October baseball action on Friday when they faced the Naranjeros de Hermosillo in the Mexican Baseball Fiesta at Kino Stadium. The game ended tied 2-2.
• It was a chance for UA fans to get a glimpse at the heralded recruiting class and to see former Wildcat catcher Cesar Salazar in action again.

Softball

• One current and three former Wildcats received camp invites to the 2019 Women’s National Selection Camp. They are junior catcher Dejah Mulipola and alumnae Chelsea Goodacre, Mo Mercado, and Danielle O’Toole. Camp runs from Jan. 1-3 in Clearwater, Florida.
• Goodacre and O’ Toole wrapped up their National Pro Fastpitch season as some of the league’s best.
• The four Wildcats are among 41 softball players vying for one of the 18 spots on the 2019 USA Softball WNT Training team that will compete USA Softball International Cup and select international events. The roster will be trimmed to 15 to play in the Pan American Games starting July 31 in Lima, Peru.

Hockey

• The ‘Cats on ice went 2-1 to start their month-long road trip. Thursday saw the ‘Cats beat Missouri State 5-2. UA kept the winning going on Friday with a comeback 5-3 win over Arkansas. UA was down 3-1 heading into the final period.
• Arizona and Arkansas did it all over again on Saturday, but the comeback magic wasn’t there for UA, losing 3-2. UA was down 2-1 heading into the final period.
• UA heads to Colorado and takes on CU on Thursday. Friday and Saturday will have the ‘Cats in Fort Collins taking on Colorado State.

Basketball

• Arizona basketball had its media day on Monday. We have coverage from the day from interviews with players to coach Sean Miller’s first press conference of the season. Head to our basketball section for that.
• We also have updates on the NCAA basketball corruption trial.
• Jerryd Bayless will be enshrined at McKale Center, as it was announced Wednesday he will be added to the UA Ring of Honor. Bayless, a former five-star recruit and Arizona native, played one season at UA from 2007-2008. He came to the program during a tremulous time, but turned his one year in Tucson into a decade long NBA career. He was the 11th overall pick in the ’08 draft and his currently playing with the Philadelphia 76ers.
• Playing a decade in the NBA is one of the ways a player can become eligible to be in the ring of honor.
• Josh Green, a five-star wing, committed to Arizona on Thursday. He joins fellow five-star player Nico Mannion and three-star center Christian Koloko in the 2019 recruiting class.
• Here is what Green’s commitment means for Arizona, and here are four things to know about UA’s newest commit.
• Green and Mannion are scheduled to visit this weekend for the Red-Blue game. Five-star forward Jeremiah Robinson-Earl is also scheduled to be in attendance.
• A scary moment for UA legend Miles Simon occurred on Thursday. Simon, an assistant coach for the Lakers, left in a stretcher during a preseason game vs the Kings. Simon was later diagnosed with pneumonia and is listed as day-to-day, per the Lakers.
• Four-star guard Terry Armstrong was visiting this weekend, and a commitment could be coming soon.
• The Red-Blue Game is Sunday!

Women’s basketball

Football

• Arizona (3-3, 2-1 Pac-12) got back to winning ways, as the defense came up big in a 24-17 win over the Cal Bears.
