Arizona Wildcats in the NFL: Week 1

How did Arizona alumni fare in Week 1?

The new NFL season is upon us. And in Week 1 there were plenty of former Arizona Wildcats in action with their respective teams.

Let’s look at how each former ‘Cat did in the opening week.

Dane Cruikshank, CB, Tennessee Titans

Result/Score: Away loss to Miami, 27-20

Game Stats: 1 tackle

Season Stats: 1 tackle

Game Notes: It was a long and wacky game, having multiple long delays due to lightning. In between everything, Cruikshank was able to get into the game and recorded his frist career NFL tackle.

Next Game: vs Houston Texans, Sept. 16

Marquis Flowers, LB, Detroit Lions

Result/Score: Home loss to Detroit, 48-17

Game Stats: 1 tackle

Season Stats: 1 tackle

Game Notes: Nothing went well for Detroit in their first game of the new regime. Matthew Stafford threw 5 picks...that’s no bueno. Flowers was released by the Patriots when rosters had to trim down 53 players, but it didn’t take him long to find a new home in Detroit. He finished the game with 1 tackle.

Next Game: at San Francisco 49ers, Sept. 16

Nick Foles, QB, Philadelphia Eagles

Result/Score: Home victory against Atlanta, 18-12

Game Stats: 19-for-34, 117 yds, 0 TD, 1 INT; 1 car, -1 yds, 0 TD

Season Stats: 19-for-34, 117 yds, 0 TD, 1 INT; 1 car, -1 yds, 0 TD

Game Notes: Foles got the nod for the Eagles since Carson Wentz has not cleared for contact. He didn’t have the greatest game statistically but it wasn’t a poor performance by any means. Plus, he once again ran a successful rendition of the Philly Special. One thing is for certain, he continues to find ways to win.

Next Game: at Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Sep 16th

Reggie Gilbert, LB/DE, Green Bay Packers

Result/Score: Home victory against Chicago, 24-23

Game Stats: 2 tackles

Season Stats: 2 tackles

Game Notes: The Green Bay front office has to be extremely glad they kept Gilbert on the 53-man. He had himself quite the preseason and continued his impressive play on Sunday night. It wasn’t his two tackles, it was him covering a rolling running back all the way to the end zone and sticking with him. It was so impressive that once the announcers realized who was covering the running back, they couldn’t hide the shock in their voice. It was just excellent play from Gilbert.

Next Game: vs Minnesota Vikings, Sep 16th

Rob Gronkowski, TE, New England Patriots

Result/Score: Home victory against Houston, 27-20

Game Stats: 7 rec, 123 yds, 1 TD

Season Stats: 7 rec, 123 yds, 1 TD

Game Notes: The only thing Gronk did was continue to prove why he is the best tight end in the NFL. He caught seven out of eight targets for 123 yards and a TD. His only mistake was losing a fumble.

Next Game: at Jacksonville Jaguars, Sept. 16

Earl Mitchell, NT, San Francisco 49ers

Result/Score: Away loss to Minnesota, 24-16

Game Stats: 3 tackles

Season Stats: 3 tackles

Game Notes: Mitchell had a pretty decent game overall on Sunday against the Vikings. He was disruptive and finished the game with 3 tackles. It should be another productive year for former Wildcat.

Next Game: vs Detroit Lions, Sept. 16

Will Parks, S, Denver Broncos

Result/Score: Home victory against Seattle, 27-24

Game Stats: 2 tackles

Season Stats: 2 tackles

Game Notes: Parks continues to be a solid safety for the Broncos. He finished their thrilling win against the Seahawks with two tackles. Expect him to have another solid season.

Next Game: vs Oakland Raiders, Sept. 16

Brooks Reed, DE, Atlanta Falcons

Result/Score: Away loss to Philadelphia, 18-12

Game Stats: 1 tackle

Season Stats: 1 tackle

Game Notes: Reed was fairly quiet in the first game of the season. He only recorded one tackle. Expect similar, if not a little step up, in production as he rotates in and out throughout games.

Next Game: vs Carolina Panthers, Sept. 16
