Arizona football: Injury updates on Khalil Tate, Dereck Boles and Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles

All should play Saturday against Southern Utah

As if the results on the scoreboard weren’t bad enough, the Arizona Wildcats had some notable injuries during Saturday’s 45-18 loss at Houston. And we’re not just referring to when Khalil Tate pulled up lame on the first offensive series.

Senior defensive tackle Dereck Boles and senior bandit Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles both left the game in the second half with undisclosed injuries.

No update was available Monday but during Tuesday’s Pac-12 teleconference Arizona coach Kevin Sumlin said both players were at practice Monday and he looks “for them to be available Saturday” when the Wildcats host Southern Utah.

As for Tate, who remained in the game but frequently limped and did not run much (until later in the game), Sumlin said he wasn’t 100 percent at Monday’s practice “but I look for that to get better during the week.”

Arizona is already expecting back a trio of 2017 starters on Saturday. Senior left tackle Layth Friekh, who had to sit out the first two games in exchange for the NCAA granting him an extra year of eligibility, as well as senior cornerback Jace Whittaker and sophomore safety Scottie Young Jr. are all likely to make their season debuts against Southern Utah.

No word on the status of junior defensive tackle PJ Johnson, who did not play against Houston after starting the opener against BYU. Johnson was seen in a walking boot on Arizona’s sideline against the Cougars.
