How Arizona’s commits performed in Week 3
Things didn’t go the way the Arizona Wildcats wanted Saturday against Houston.
While Kevin Sumlin and his staff still learn about the current team, their first full recruiting class took to fields all around the country over the weekend. Here’s a look at how each future Wildcat performed in Week 3:
Grant Gunnell, QB, St. Pius X
Result/Score: Home victory against La Marque, 65-21
School Record: 2-0 (0-0)
Game Stats: 19-for-33, 388 yds, 6 TD, 0 INT; 3 car, 47 yds, 0 TD
Season Stats: 52-for-73, 802 yds, 11 TD, 0 INT; 11 car, 93 yds, 2 TD
Game Notes: Gunnell had quite the game. He showed great accuracy, touch and arm strength throughout the night. He also showed off his athleticism on a few rushes, including a nifty spin move on a big gain.
Next Game: at Episcopal, Sept. 14th
Kwabena Watson, OLB/DE, Edison
Result/Score: Away victory against Clovis North, 37-28
School Record: 2-2 (0-0)
Game Stats: 1 tackle (based off clips)
Season Stats: 3 tackles (based off clips)
Game Notes: Edison bounced back nicely and had a nice victory over Clovis North. Still not 100% sure on Watson’s production but based off the 12-second clip from the game he had a tackle. I also added his highlights from the previous week against Buchanan.
Clovis North:
Buchanan:
Next Game: at Dinuba, Sept. 14th
Maurice Gaines Jr., CB, St. Thomas More
Result/Score: Home victory against Nordrhein-Westfalen, 47-0
School Record: 1-0 (0-0)
Game Stats: 1 tackle (based off clips)
Season Stats: 1 tackle (based off clips)
Game Notes: Gaines and his Chancellor football team played their first game against a team that traveled from Germany to Connecticut. St. Thomas More easily handled the Green Machine 47-0. Based off a few clips, Gaines flashed his press coverage skills. Also came up and made a very physical tackle.
Next Game: at Choate Rosemary Hall, Sept. 15th
Jalen Johnson, WR, Eleanor Roosevelt
Result/Score: Away loss against Servite, 32-13
School Record: 2-2 (0-0)
Game Stats: 5 rec, 92 yds, 0 TD
Season Stats: 16 rec, 347 yds, 3 TD
Game Notes: The Mustangs did not have a great game against Servite on Friday. There were multiple mistakes offensively that hurt the team. However, Johnson had a solid game overall and made some clutch catches to help move the sticks for Roosevelt. He continues to flash his hands and his playmaking ability downfield.
Next Game: at Rancho Mirage, Sept. 14th
Kane Bradford, DT, Skyline
Result/Score: Home game against Ennis cancelled
School Record: 0-1 (0-0)
Game Stats: N/A
Season Stats: 1 tackle, 1.0 TFL (based on clips)
Game Notes: Based on everything that I could find, the gamed was canceled.
Next Game: at Sam Houston, Sept. 13th
Chris Roland, DB, William Knight
Result/Score: Home victory against Paloma Valley, 28-21
School Record: 2-1 (0-0)
Game Stats: 6 tackles, 1.0 TFL, 1 forced fumble
Season Stats: 20 tackles, 2.0 TFL, 2 INT, 1 PBU, 1 forced fumble; punt return for a TD
Game Notes: The Hawks won their second game of the season, taking down Paloma Valley. Roland played physically again, which is starting to become a common theme. I love his desire to come up and hit someone. He plays the run rather well and his physicality cannot be overlooked.
Next Game: at Quartz Hill, Sept. 14th
Derrion Clark, LB, South Oak Cliff
Result/Score: Home loss to Duncanville, 7-0
School Record: 1-1 (0-0)
Game Stats: 2 tackles, 1.0 TFL (based off clips)
Season Stats: 17 tackles, 4.0 TFL
Game Notes: It was a defensive struggle as SOC fell to Duncanville 7-0. Clark has about 30 seconds of clips but they are still long enough to show off what he will bring to Tucson. The first is patience, dissecting the play before committing. The others include aggression and sure tackling.
Next Game: vs Wilmer-Hutchins, Sept. 14th
Michael Wiley, RB, Strake Jesuit
Result/Score: Home victory against West Brook, 55-40
School Record: 2-0 (0-0)
Game Stats: 27 car, 138 yds, 0 TD; 1 rec, 0 yds, 0 TD
Season Stats: 42 car, 330 yds, 2 TD; 2 rec, 19 yds, 0 TD
Game Notes: Wiley and Strake Jesuit won their second game in a row, beating powerhouse West Brook. Wiley had another solid game, going over 100 yards for the second week in a row. He is having a great senior year so far, averaging around 8 yards per carry so far. Below are his highlights from last week’s game against St. Thomas Catholic.
St. Thomas Catholic:
Next Game: vs Eisenhower, Sept. 14th
Jordan Morgan, OT, Marana
Result/Score: Away victory against Desert View, 35-0
School Record: 4-0 (0-0)
Game Stats: N/A
Season Stats: N/A
Game Notes: Marana keeps rolling along, climbing to 4-0 after beating Desert View. Morgan and the rest of the offensive line sprung the Tigers for 298 rushing yards. It is unknown if they gave up any tackles for loss or sacks.
Next Game: vs Williams Field, Sept. 14th
Eddie Siaumau, OLB/DE, Leone
Result/Score: Unknown
School Record: Unknown
Game Stats: Unknown
Season Stats: Unknown
Game Notes: Leone had a game against Fagaitua but I have been unable to find out any information on the game.
Next Game: Unknown
Kyle Ostendorp, P, Desert Vista
Result/Score: Home victory against Valley Vista, 48-20
School Record: 3-0
Game Stats: N/A (No stats or clips available)
Season Stats: 5 punts, 229 yds, 45.8 AVG, 56 yd long, 2 Inside the 20
Game Stats: Desert Vista continues to dominate as they stay undefeated, knocking off Valley Vista. I was unable to find any stats or clips of Ostendorp.
