Up Next: Southern Utah crushed by lowly Oregon State

Arizona hosts Thunderbirds on Sept. 15

Based on how their next opponent fared on Saturday, if the Arizona Wildcats struggle to beat Southern Utah then this is going to be a rough season.

The Thunderbirds, an FCS school, were thumped 48-25 at Oregon State in a battle of the next two foes on Arizona’s schedule. The Wildcats host Southern Utah on Sept. 15 and visit OSU in the Pac-12 opener on Sept. 22.

Southern Utah fell behind 38-0—sound familiar?—midway through the second quarter and trailed 41-7 at halftime before getting some second-half garbage points and yards. It gained 488 yards but yielded 649 to a Beavers team that had lost 11 straight games.

The Thunderbirds (0-2) allowed OSU’s Jermar Jefferson to run for 238 yards and four touchdowns, part of 360 rushing yards for the Beavers. Arizona has gained just 279 yards on the ground in its two losses.

Southern Utah, which opened the season with a home loss to North Alabama, a program that just moved up from Division II, is 3-25 all-time against FBS schools. Its last win was in 2013 at South Alabama.

Arizona’s last loss to a team not currently at the FBS level came in 1961, to West Texas A&M.
