Wildcat Wrap: Arizona soccer enjoying longest winning streak since 2004

Football lost again, volleyball picked up its first L, but soccer keeps racking up wins

It was a rough week for the Arizona Wildcats as the volleyball team lost for the first time this season, and the football team was dominated by Houston.

But another week is upon the Wildcat faithful to Bear Down and cheer the ‘Cats to W’s.

Let’s wade through the week that was in the Wildcat Wrap. (Let us know in the comments if we missed anything.)

Soccer

• The Wildcats continued their winning ways, beating Boise State on Friday before topping Baylor on Sunday to improve to 6-1. Arizona has won six games in a row, their longest winning streak since 2004. The 3-1 win against Baylor was particularly impressive since the Bears made the Elite Eight last season.
• UA’s freshmen had a big weekend. Emily Knous scored twice while Brooke Wilson and Hallie Pearson each added a goal. Knous is tied with sophomore Jada Talley for the team lead in goals (4), while Wilson has three. With so much talented youth on this team, it’s hard to not be excited about the direction of the program.
• Arizona wraps up non-conference play Friday against Cal State Fullerton. Then they face No. 1 Stanford on the road the following Friday.
• Shoutout to walk-on Taryn Siegele, who scored her first career goal Friday, two years after she was told she wasn’t good enough to make the team:

Softball

• Danielle O’Toole and Team USA earned Best team of August honors by Team USA.
• The former ‘Cats pitcher better known as Tooly, will represent the USA and UA in the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.
• The team earned its bid to the games after going perfect and winning a gold medal in the WBSC Women’s World Championship over the summer.
• Moreover, Tooly announced Tuesday on her Twitter she’s getting married next September. Congrats, Tooly!

Track and Field

• Men’s and women’s cross-country teams started their season on last Saturday at the George Kyte Classic in Flagstaff. Both teams placed third, with the men scoring 70 points and the women scoring 72.
• Freshman Connor McCabe placed ninth overall with a time of 23:48.2 for the men and fellow freshman Keelah Barger took fifth for the women coming in at 16:02.6. Other placers were Ryan Matson, Travis Thorne, Lauren Neugeboren, and Madison Christopher.
• The ‘Cats run again next Friday in Tucson as they host the Dave Murray Invitational at Randolph Municipal Golf Course.
• Sheldon Blockburger was named assistant coach to the Track and Field team on Wednesday. He will oversee the combined events and jumps groups. Blockburger is no stranger to the program, however, as he has 10 previous seasons at UA. The last three years he was the jumps and multi-events assistant at USC.

Volleyball

• In their toughest game of the season so far, the Wildcats lost for the first time to host New Mexico State in the final day of the Borderland Classic. The ‘Cats (8-1) went five-sets with NMSU, but it was the Aggies that rallied to take the final set 15-12.
• UA beat UTEP and Montana on Friday to open the tournament. The Wildcats’ 15-stright set wins streak was snapped against UTEP. Sophomore Paige Whipple had a season-high 18 kills and a career-high .405 hitting percentage against UTEP. Whipple, senior Kendra Dahlke, junior Emi Pua’a, and senior Victoria Svorinic had aces.
• In the loss to NMSU, Dahlke had career-highs with 30 kills and 33 points. Junior Makenna Martin led the way with two aces and 17 digs.
• The team received 28 points in the AVCA poll last week after sweeping the Cactus Classic to put them No .29 in the polls.
• UA is back in action on Friday at McKale Center for the Wildcat Classic, where a rematch with NMSU looks to happen. University Tennessee-Martin and UC Davis will also be in town for the weekend.

Baseball

• Former ‘Cats pitcher Kevin Ginkel was named Arizona Diamondback Pitcher of the Month for August. Ginkel was recently selected to play in the Arizona Fall League along with UA alum Bobby Dalbec.
• Ethan Gourson committed to the ‘Cats on Thursday. Gourson, a class of 2021 commit, is from San Diego and listed as a short-shop/outfielder.

Football

• Former Arizona linebacker Marquis Flowers signed with the Detroit Lions on Monday. Flowers, who enters his fifth season in the NFL, spent last season with the New England Patriots.
• The Kevin Sumlin era isn’t off to the start everyone envisioned as UA (0-2) was clawed by the Houston Cougars 45-18 Saturday afternoon. This is the first time since 1981 the ‘Cats have started a season 0-2.

Basketball

• Gabe York, aka “York City,” signed with the Orlando Magic on Wednesday.
• York, the former Arizona guard, signed an exhibit 10 deal and is expected to play for the Magic’s G-league affiliate the Lakeland Magic. He played in Germany with Medi Bayreuth in the 2017-18 season.
• Five-star point guard Nico Mannion cut his recruitment list to two schools on Friday: Arizona and Marquette. He had been considering Duke, Villanova and others. The Phoenix native is scheduled to take his official visit to Arizona on Oct. 19-21. He will take his unofficial visit on Oct. 14 for the Red-Blue Game.
• Five-star forward Jeremiah Robinson-Earl is also scheduled to take his official visit from Oct. 13-15.
• Max Meyer of Sports Illustrated picked the Wildcats to finish seventh in the Pac-12 in the upcoming season. He has Oregon first, Arizona State sixth.
