Khalil Tate named a top-10 quarterback by CBS

More national recognition for Arizona’s signal-caller

The preseason recognition continues to pour in for Arizona Wildcats junior quarterback Khalil Tate. CBS’ Dennis Dodd declared him as a top 10 quarterback for the 2018 season.

Tate joins two other Pac-12 quarterbacks on the list, Jake Browning (Washington) and Justin Herbert (Oregon). The Pac-12 ranks second on this list, trailing only the SEC’s four.

Dodd’s explanation for including Tate is simple:

No. 7 rusher in the country. No. 1 quarterback rusher in the country. Tate should flourish under a new quarterback-friendly, Heisman-friendly coach (Kevin Sumlin).

It’s no surprise to find Tate on this list after his breakout sophomore season. He deservedly developed the reputation as a lethal runner. However, he also had flashes throughout the year of a capable passer as well. This was best displayed in Arizona’s bowl game where Tate threw for 302 yards and five touchdowns.

Despite recording the lowest passing yard total on the list, the Arizona quarterback finished fifth on the list in terms of total yards per game with 273. He made up for it on the ground as his 1,411 yards accounts for approximately 36 percent of the list’s total rushing yards in 2017.

What separates Tate from the rest of the list is he was the 2017 full time starter for only eight games. If you extrapolate the numbers of his eight starts plus the Colorado game, where he entered the game on the first drive, over the other four games, he would rank third with 319 total yards per game.

Vegasinsider.com has Tate with the third most favorable odds to win the 2018 Heisman Trophy at 16/1.

Here are some of the other lists Tate has been recognized on this offseason:
