Danielle O’Toole starts, wins International Cup with USA Softball

The former Wildcat started against Japan in the International Cup championship game

With the International Cup on the line, USA Softball turned to Danielle O’Toole.

The former Arizona left-hander was given the start and allowed three runs in 3.1 innings as Team USA Red downed Japan, 10-5, in the championship game.

O’Toole exited in the fourth with a 4-1 lead and two runners in scoring position, but UCLA right-hander Rachel Garcia surrendered a two-run single to make it 4-3, adding a pair of earned runs to O’Toole’s ledger.

Still, O’Toole was in the line for the win until Japan tied it at 5-all with a two-run homer in the fifth.

USA answered with a pair of solo homers in the bottom of the fifth to re-take the lead, then tallied three runs in the sixth to break the game open.

Next up for O’Toole and USA Softball is the WBSC Women’s World Championship in Chiba, Japan on August 2-12. They return to Japan in late October for the Japan Cup in Takasaki City, and eventually head back to Japan for the Olympics in 2020.

O’Toole joined the University of San Diego’s coaching staff after graduating from the UA in 2017. At USD, she is primarily responsible for handling the team’s pitching staff.

O’Toole also plays for the Chicago Bandits in National Pro Fastpitch. She has a 0.75 ERA in 12 innings this season. The club drafted her eighth overall in the 2017 NPF Draft.

O’Toole was an All-American and the Pac-12 Pitcher of the Year as a senior at Arizona.

UA catcher Dejah Mulipola and former shortstop Mo Mercado are playing for Team USA Blue in the International Cup. That team is currently battling China for third place.
