Channing Frye to sign with Cleveland Cavaliers, per report
The former Wildcat is returning to Cleveland
LeBron James might have left, but Channing Frye is back.
The former Arizona Wildcat has agreed to sign with the Cleveland Cavaliers on a one-year, $2.4 million deal, according to Yahoo!’s Shams Charania.
Frye, 35, was traded by the Orlando Magic to Cleveland during the 2015-16 season where he stayed until last February when he was dealt to the Los Angeles Lakers.
Some believed Frye would re-sign with the Lakers, adding a veteran frontcourt presence to James’ new team, but obviously that won’t be happening.
Frye averaged 5.0 points and 2.5 rebounds per game last season, while shooting 34 percent from 3. The White Plains, New York native is entering his 13th season in the league. Frye won a title with the Cavaliers in 2015-16.
The Cavaliers, who have appeared in four straight NBA Finals, are expected to take a major step back after losing James, so it would not be surprising if Frye is eventually traded to a contender midway through the season.
