Justify, Bob Baffert win The Kentucky Derby

On to the Preakness

For the fifth time in his career, Bob Baffert has won The Kentucky Derby.

The University of Arizona alum will take home the roses for the first time since 2015 when he won the race with eventual Triple Crown winner American Pharoah.

Justify went off as the favorite, making it the sixth consecutive year that the favorite won the derby. This is the first time since 1882 that an unraced two-year-old won The Kentucky Derby.

Here’s the full race:

Baffert is now second all-time in Derby wins and will turn his attention to the Preakness Stakes in two weeks. He has won The Preakness six times in his career.

This race was an easy win for Justify, who was running second for the first half of the race just off the rail. Then he took over in the second half of it, winning going away. Being out front early was key since this was the wettest Kentucky Derby in history.

Baffert’s other horse Solomini finished 10th. Fellow Arizona alum Todd Pletcher had horses finish 3rd, 9th, 17th, and 19th.
