Allonzo Trier invited to NBA Combine

A good opportunity for Trier to boost his draft stock

Arizona Wildcats guard Allonzo Trier has been invited to the 2018 NBA Draft Combine, according to Bruce Pascoe of the Arizona Daily Star.

Pascoe also confirms that Rawle Alkins has been invited, which had been reported last week, and that Dusan Ristic has not been invited. The event runs from May 16-19 in Chicago.

Over 60 players are usually invited to the combine, so it’s not a huge surprise to see Trier get an invite, as he was one of the top scorers in college basketball this season.

However, Trier’s draft stock has seemed to be trending downward — at least according to mock drafts — and Sports Illustrated pegged him as just the No. 83 prospect in the draft, so it wouldn’t have been that surprising if he didn’t get invited, either.

As you can see from the mock draft projections below, there is currently a chance Trier goes undrafted this June, so a good showing in the combine could pay dividends for the two-guard.

Trier averaged 18.1 points per game with a super efficient line of .499/.380/865 this season. He also averaged a career-high 3.2 assists per contest.

But his passing ability still remains a question mark, as does his defensive prowess. Here is what Jeremy Woo of Sports Illustrated wrote about Trier, who Woo projected will go undrafted:

Trier is a dynamic scorer, but his selfish style of play has earned him few admirers among NBA types. The ball sticks in his hands, and you question how he views himself and how willing he’ll be to adjust when he’s not the top perimeter option. He’s not a high-end athlete, which means a lot of contested threes and difficulty attacking the basket—there’s a high bar for guards who are professional scorers, so to speak. He’s not a playmaker or a great defender, and has little appeal beyond his shooting ability. Trier needs to score to be successful and certainly has talent, but needs to reinvent himself a bit to have a chance at sticking in the NBA.

Trier in the mock drafts

It is difficult to find two-round mock drafts, but here are the ones I could find and where Trier stacks up in them:

The NBA Draft is Thursday, June 21 in New York.
