Nick Hundley credits ‘University of Arizona math’ for walk-off hit

The UA alum was well-prepared for a high leverage situation because of his alma mater

Two outs. Ninth inning. Bases loaded. Trailing by a run.

Pinch-hitter Nick Hundley stepped up to the plate in one of the most pressure-packed scenarios imaginable.

But it turned out to be a piece of cake.

The former Arizona Wildcat laced the second pitch he saw up the middle, scoring two runs, and propelling the San Francisco Giants to a thrilling 6-5 walk-off victory over the San Diego Padres.

How did the 34-year-old make it look so easy? How was he so calm, cool, and collected with the game on the line? He credited his alma mater.

“I knew [Austin Slater] was leading off the inning and the pitcher was hitting sixth, so just quick University of Arizona math on my part, I knew that if I come up, I’m coming up with two outs and bases loaded,” Hundley said.

“That was my mindset from the first pitch in the inning, to get ready for a two-out, bases-loaded situation. It came to fruition and thankfully we got it done.”
