Arizona to face Colorado in Pac-12 Tournament quarterfinals

The Wildcats will square off against the Buffaloes in Las Vegas for the third straight year

Death, taxes, and Arizona facing Colorado in the Pac-12 Tournament.

For the third straight year, the Wildcats and Buffaloes will battle it out in Las Vegas. No. 8 seed Colorado beat No. 9 seed Arizona State 97-85on Wednesday to advance to the quarterfinals where they will face No.1-seeded Arizona on Thursday.

Arizona and Colorado split the regular season series, with the home team winning each time.

While CU isn’t a rival the same way ASU is, Buffaloes head coach Tad Boyle stirred up some feathers in January after his team upset the then-14th-ranked Wildcats in Boulder.

Boyle agreed that his team’s victory over Arizona was “extra satisfying” because of the Wildcats’ involvement in a college basketball recruiting scandal.

“It’s ironic we’re playing Arizona. I’ve got great respect for Sean Miller and the type of coach he is. They recruit very, very well. USC has recruited very, very well. The two most talented teams in our league from top to bottom are USC and Arizona. So, hell yes there’s extra satisfaction,” Boyle said at the time.

The Wildcats got revenge in Tucson just three weeks later, taking down the Buffaloes 80-71.

ASU in danger of missing the NCAA Tournament?

ESPN’s Joe Lunardi and our Matt Sheeley both projected ASU to be an 11-seed in the NCAA Tournament heading into Wednesday’s Pac-12 Tournament opener, but now the Sun Devils are in serious danger of missing the tourney altogether after falling to the Buffs.

ASU had a perfect 12-0 non-conference record, including wins over Kansas and Xavier, but are just 8-11 against the Pac-12 since.

The Sun Devils went from the No. 3 team in the country to one that will be sweating it out come Selection Sunday.
