Allonzo Trier snubbed from Jerry West Award finalist list

Trier’s numbers are good enough to earn him a spot

The Jerry West Award finalist list was trimmed to five shooting guards on Tuesday.

They are Duke’s Grayson Allen, Purdue’s Carsen Edwards, Creighton’s Marcus Foster, Boston College’s Jerome Robinson, and Oakland’s Kendrick Nunn.

Not on the list? Arizona’s Allonzo Trier. He is not happy about that.

Trier is averaging 18.9 points, 3.3 assists, and 3.2 rebounds this season, while shooting 52.3 percent from the field, 40.4 percent from 3, and 85.6 percent from the charity stripe.

Impressive numbers, obviously. But let’s see how that stacks up with the rest of the competition. Did he really get snubbed?

The verdict? Trier does have a point. The least impressive candidate on this list is Allen, who clearly has inferior numbers to Trier (and everyone else). Allen shouldn’t be on this list.

Trier also has better numbers than Edwards, and Nunn too, if you take usage rate into account. Foster and Robinson deserve to be on this list.

So why is Trier not on this list if his numbers suggest he should be? Maybe it has something to do with his brief, two-game hiatus after failing another PED test.
