Mike Stoops proud of ‘my Arizona crew’ for reaching the Super Bowl

The former UA coach congratulated his Nick Foles, Rob Gronkowski, and Marquis Flowers for reaching the Super Bowl

Three former Arizona Wildcats are set to play in Super Bowl LII in a couple weeks.

Nick Foles will quarterback the Philadelphia Eagles, while tight end Rob Gronkowski and linebacker Marquis Flowers will suit up for the New England Patriots.

Only eight colleges are sending more alumni to the Super Bowl which is pretty remarkable since Arizona does not exactly have a ton of them in the league to begin with.

Foles played three seasons at Arizona (2009-11), Gronkowski played two (2007-08) and Flowers played four (2010-13).

All three were recruited by former UA coach Mike Stoops, and apparently he still follows their careers.

Stoops tweeted Sunday night that he is “proud of my Arizona crew” for making it to the Super Bowl.

Stoops, now the defensive coordinator at Oklahoma, also retweeted a few tweets that included highlights of Foles’ monstrous performance against the Vikings.

Stoops coached at Arizona from 2004-11 and was responsible for digging the program out of the dark days that were the John Mackovic era.

He guided Arizona to a trio of bowl games before sputtering in 2011 which led to his firing and Rich Rodriguez’s hiring.

While it is debatable whose tenure was better between those two coaches, there is one thing Stoops undoubtedly was better than RichRod at — getting players to the next level.

Only two players recruited by Rodriguez — Will Parks and Scooby Wright III — were drafted into the NFL.

Stoops? 22.

And three will be competing on the biggest stage on Feb. 4.
