Arizona’s new head coach is getting to work

New Arizona Wildcats head coach Kevin Sumlin has wasted no time getting to work at his new job, already hitting the recruiting trail in advance of National Signing Day.

During his introductory press conference, Sumlin stated that his first priority was to get to know the recruits who have already signed and/or committed to Arizona.

He has done that, and his first few stops this weekend were important ones.

Jamarye Joiner

It was always seemed Joiner would stay in Tucson, but other colleges came knocking. Enter Sumlin and the Cienega quarterback has already shut down his recruitment, which is definitely an important development for this class.

To top it off, Sumlin’s first recruiting visit as a Wildcat was a stop in Vail to see the talented signal-caller.

Desert Pines High School

UA really broke through with the Las Vegas-based school during the 2017 class. Tony Fields, Edgar Burrola, and Tony Wallace all played at Desert Pines. And the success continued into the 2018 class. Wide receiver Jaden Mitchell is a 2018 commit and grey shirt candidate after suffering an ACL injury during the season.

Mitchell isn’t the only player that Arizona and Sumlin are looking at, either. Other players on UA’s radar include 2019 athlete Cameron Wiley, 2020 running back Jyden King, 2020 defensive end Darnell Washington, and 2020 defensive end Jonathan Pickett.

Adam Plant Jr.

While Sumlin was in Las Vegas, he made a stop to see defensive end commit Adam Plant Jr. The talented end from Bishop Gorman High School committed to Arizona early in 2017 but de-committed a couple of months later. He then re-committed on Nov. 20. He will come in at a position of need and should immediately challenge for playing time.

Maybe UA can see if his dad has eligibility as well.

As soon as Sumlin was named Arizona’s new coach, Gerald said it was a “great hire” by the UA.

That is noteworthy because he is the No. 1 junior college defensive end and definitely a player Arizona could use.

While Sumlin did not visit him this past week (at least that we know of), defensive coordinator Marcel Yates did.

Gerald attends College of the Canyons in Valencia, California.

Keyshawn Johnson Jr.

Just thought it would be worth mentioning that Johnson signaled Saturday night that he is now in Tucson, basically confirming last week’s report that he is enrolling at Arizona.

The Nebraska transfer is a big add for Arizona. He was a four-star recruit coming out of a high school, and gives the Wildcats much-needed size and talent at wide receiver.
