Arizona defensive assistants Jahmile Addae and Vince Amey leaving staff

Sumlin will bring in some of his own guys on the defensive side of the ball

Despite keeping Marcel Yates as the team’s defensive coordinator, new Arizona Wildcats head coach Kevin Sumlin appears to be making some changes to the coaching staff on that side of the ball.

According to tweets by players, defensive backs coach Jahmile Addae and defensive line coach Vince Amey will no longer be coaching at Arizona.

Both Addae and Amey were promoted to on-field assistants in 2016 after spending time as analysts on Rich Rodriguez’s staff. Addae played college football at West Virginia while Amey played at Arizona State before moving on to NFL Europe and the Arena Football League.

It’s not too surprising that Sumlin is going to make plenty of changes to the assistant staff while keeping Yates in place. Sumlin and Yates coached together at Texas A&M for two seasons before Yates returned to Boise State. Sumlin also has background with current Arizona staff member and former quarterback B.J. Denker.

Sumlin’s defensive backs coach last year, Ron Cooper, has already taken a job at Arkansas. Texas A&M defensive ends coach Terry Price is staying at A&M under Jimbo Fisher, and it’s unclear what defensive tackles coach David Turner is doing this year. Turner is not listed on Fisher’s 2018 staff and did not go with Cooper to Arkansas.

In the coming days, Noel Mazzone is expected to be named Arizona’s new offensive coordinator, and Clarence McKinney is expected to be the new running backs coach, both of whom worked for Sumlin in College Station last year. It’s unclear what the status of the rest of the current Arizona staff is right now.
