Marcel Yates will be retained on Arizona staff

Sumlin will keep the Wildcats’ defensive coordinator

The Arizona Wildcats have their head coach in place, and now they’ll need some new assistant coaches, but one name has been confirmed.

Kevin Sumlin announced to the team Tuesday morning and to the media shortly thereafter that Marcel Yates will be retained as the team’s defensive coordinator.

Yates previously worked as the co-defensive coordinator at Texas A&M under Sumlin in 2012 and 2013.

This will likely help keep the current team intact as well as a good chunk of the current recruiting class. Yates seems to be very popular with the players, with many of them campaigning for him to be the head coach after Rich Rodriguez was dismissed two weeks ago.

As far as the rest of the assistant staff goes, Sumlin said that those decisions will be made in “the next coming days”. It’s been reported that Noel Mazzone will be the team’s new offensive coordinator. Mazzone was with Sumlin for the last two years, and was previously at UCLA and ASU.

An assistant staff being in place soon will be important with National Signing Day coming up in three weeks. Sumlin said that there are “five or six” spots left in this class for Arizona that he will need to fill by then.

But having Yates in place will be huge for keeping the current team in Tucson.
