Arizona Wildcats in Las Vegas Summer League: Jud Buechler, Miles Simon, Gabe York win Finals with Lakers

Masterful coaching job by Jud Buechler — maybe

The NBA Finals were won by a team coached by a former Arizona Wildcat, and now the same is true for the Las Vegas Summer League Finals.

The Jud Buechler-led Los Angeles Lakers topped the Portland Trail Blazers 110-98 on Monday to win the Las Vegas Summer League.

Gabe York played four minutes for L.A. and did not record a stat.

Nick Johnson scored seven points in 17 minutes on 3-9 shooting for the Blazers.

Miles Simon was one of Buechler’s assistants.

The Lakers were able to win despite first round picks Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram, and Josh Hart sitting out the finale with injuries.

The Lakers actually lost their first two games of Summer League, but won their last six to take home the trophy, and were the lowest-seeded team to ever win LVSL.

Lakers forward Kyle Kuzma — a former Utah Ute — was awarded Summer League Finals MVP and Ball — a former UCLA Bruin — won Summer League MVP, so it was a good day all around for the Pac-12.

York averaged 3.1 points per contest in nine Summer League games. Johnson averaged 6.9 points in 17.5 minutes, shooting 43.5 percent from the field and 8-13 from 3 in eight games.
