No Arizona Wildcats on Pac-12’s “Top 12 Athletes of the Year” list
Welp
On Sunday evening, the Pac-12 had a special show on its cable network where the conference announced it’s “Top 12 Athletes” of the past academic year.
And neither school from the state of Arizona placed anyone on this list.
Here’s the full top 12:
- Kelsey Plum — Washington women’s basketball
- Katie Ledecky — Stanford women’s swimming
- Edward Cheserek — Oregon men’s track/cross country
- MyKayla Skinner — Utah gymnastics
- Lonzo Ball — UCLA men’s basketball
- Christian McCaffrey — Stanford football
- Dillon Brooks — Oregon men’s basketball
- Kelly Claes/Sara Hughes — USC beach volleyball
- Inky Ajanaku — Stanford women’s volleyball
- Adoree’ Jackson — USC football
- Sydney Wiese — Oregon State women’s basketball
- John Ross — Washington football
This is a fine list. Certainly it would be difficult to take anyone off of it, although how do you not have any Oregon State baseball players on it? But I was kind of surprised (this is fake outrage on my part) that neither Katiyana Mauga nor Sage Watson was on this list for Arizona.
Mauga is surprising for a couple of reasons. First off, there’s no softball players on this list, which is surprising since you could argue that softball is still the Pac-12’s defining sport (excluding water polo). And then when you set the conference’s all-time home run record? Seems like a no-brainer.
I also bring up Watson just because that’s the first person that came to my mind when I first heard of this being a thing. She’s the National Champion in the 400m hurdles, and won the thing by almost a full second.
You could also throw Lauri Markkanen in this too, but he seems like a distant third compared to Mauga and Watson.
So what do you think? Are any of them deserving? Is there another Wildcat that you thought had a great year?
