Arizona basketball recruiting: 2018 power forward Miles Norris picks Oregon plus other Wildcats updates

Oregon gets their first 2018 commitment.

Miles Norris is headed for the Pacific Northwest and the Oregon Ducks, the four-star power forward announced Wednesday.

Unofficially down to Oregon and Arizona, the incoming high school senior — ranked 32nd in his class — chose the Ducks and Dana Altman to become the program’s first commitment in the 2018 class.

Until the Shareef O’Neal commitment, many felt that Arizona led or was at least even with Oregon for the 6-foot-10 forward. However, after that surprise commitment, Norris understandably had second thoughts about playing time and roster space at Arizona with the wing positions filling up fast.

"Oregon and Arizona had been his top two but with UA landing Shareef O'Neal at the same position, there's probably less of a fit with each party than there was a month ago," Josh Gershon of Scout told Bruce Pascoe Tuesday afternoon.

Norris is looking forward to playing Oregon brand of basketball, as he detailed to Rivals in early May.

"I just love their style of play. I love how they run the floor and how the coaches just let their guys play,” he told Krysten Peek. “That’s what I like the most about them. The coaching staff has just said I would be a good fit and can come in and just play the way I've always played."

Other Recruiting Updates

• Transfer Watch: Cameron Johnson and Chase Jeter both visited the campus last weekend. Both told ZagsBlog they had a good time. Johnson heads to UCLA and then Oregon for additional visits this week. As for Jeter, a former five-star recruit, he said “The Arizona visit was great. Their message was the team can be a championship contender and it would be a good fit for myself.”
• Five-star and top 25 player in the 2018 class Gerald Liddell released his Top-7 Wednesday. Along with Arizona, he has Baylor, Texas, California, SMU, Oregon, and UCLA.
• Cameron Reddish, the fourth-ranked player in the 2018 class, has a top eight of Arizona, Duke, Kentucky, Villanova, Miami, Maryland, UConn, and UCLA.
• Don’t be so convinced Marvin Bagley is leaving the state of Arizona. SB Nation also did a feature on the top ranked recruit. It’s worth a read.
• You can add another point guard target to the mix with Devon Dotson. He said that the staff has been talking to him a lot lately.
• The never ending saga of the Brian Bowen recruitment took another turn with the five-star flying across the country to visit Oregon on his own dime. It wouldn’t surprise me if that’s where he ended up if it’s not Arizona. There’s plenty of playing time available and it is surely better than Creighton or DePaul (no offense to those programs). Plus, Oregon has a nice recruiting class coming in.
• The Trevon Duval recruitment might be at an end. He told Rivals three days ago he will “be announcing in the next couple of days.” Keep in mind, though, that nobody is sticking to their own timetables these days. Duke is the odds-on favorite.
