Arizona football recruiting SitRep: Wildcats land former Boise State defensive tackle Dereck Boles

More help along the defensive line is on it’s way.

It was an overall slowish week for the Arizona Wildcats on the recruiting front. The ‘Cats continued to focus on California and some other familiar areas with offers, while missing out on a DE grad transfer. However, they did land a big JuCo defensive lineman.

Late Sunday night, ex-Boise State defensive tackle Dereck Boles gave his commitment to Arizona and his old defensive coordinator Marcel Yates. Boles was removed from the Boise State program after being charged with felony mayhem for biting off a portion of a teammate’s ear.

He was found not guilty of those charges back on April 13th. After the incident, which took place in February 2016, Boles transferred to Coffeyville Community College. He was originally committed to Florida International, but never signed.

Boles had 11 tackles (4 for loss) and a sack in 2015 with Boise State, which was his redshirt freshman season. According to the Coffeyville website, the 6-foot-3, 290 pound Boles recorded 66 tackles (12 for loss) and five sacks in junior college this past year. He will be eligible to play for Arizona this upcoming season, providing more usable depth on the defensive line.

With that, let’s dive into the rest of this week’s SitRep.

Recruiting Notes

  • DeAndre Square (4-star S/OLB from Cass Tech High School in Detroit, MI) released his Top 10. Teams include Arizona, Iowa State, Pittsburgh, Indiana, Iowa, Syracuse, LSU, Michigan State, Kentucky, and Wisconsin. It is most likely a long shot for the ‘Cats but it is noteworthy to make the cut.
  • Jacob Isaia (3-star interior lineman from Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, NV) finally received an offer from the Wildcats on Sunday. Isaia has visited Tucson a couple of times in the past 6-9 months. He already has a good relationship with the staff and could make another visit in the future, which would only help Arizona. This is a recruitment to keep an eye on.
  • New hire Brian Knorr stated that he has been recruiting the Dallas and Atlanta areas the past couple of weeks. He is making his way to California this week, so expect more offers to go out.
  • Minnesota DE grad transfer Gaelin Elmore chose the East Carolina Pirates over Arizona on Saturday. Wildcat fans have been up in arms about it, bashing recruiting, the state of the program, Rich Rodriguez, the list goes on. I do not agree with any of these reasons. Instead, it appears Elmore picked ECU over Arizona because of the Boles commitment.
