Arizona baseball evens weekend series with College of Charleston with 4-3 win on Saturday

A crucial relief outing and a couple catchers got the Wildcats in the win column

After recording just two hits in Friday night’s loss to the College of Charleston Cougars, the Arizona Wildcats picked up two crucial hits from its catchers on Saturday night to earn a 4-3 win to even the series.

It started in the bottom of the seventh. Michael Flynn took over on the mound for Cameron Ming, and needed just 11 pitches to strike out the side, keeping the score tied at three, and seemingly putting the momentum in the Wildcats’ favor.

Nick Quintana led off the Arizona half of the 8th with a single, and was then pinch-run for with Sawyer Gieseke.

However, Gieseke was erased immediately by getting picked off, which would be important considering Ryan Haug followed that with a double to right.

Cesar Salazar took Gieseke off the hook though, poking an RBI single to right field to give Arizona the 4-3 lead, its first lead of the weekend.

That was all Flynn would need, finishing the game and recording the win, improving to 3-0 on the season. He only allowed one baserunner in this three innings of work.

Arizona fell behind 3-0 early in this one, but a double steal resulting in a run and a Haug RBI single up the middle in the fourth inning cut the deficit to one.

The following inning, JJ Matijevic hit an RBI groundout to first base, tying the game at three.

Ming ended up scattering seven hits and three walks over six innings, resulting in three runs (two earned). He threw 103 pitches on the night, with 63 of them in the strike zone. Both teams recorded seven hits on the night, and both teams stranded eight runners.

The rubber match of this three game series is scheduled to start at 11 AM PT. You should be able to stream it here. Cody Deason is the probable starting pitcher for the Wildcats. He’ll likely face freshman RHP Jakob Frishmuth (3-4, 6.17 ERA, 29 K).
