Arizona basketball: Kobi Simmons officially declares for NBA Draft

Done deal

After a report surfaced Wednesday afternoon that Arizona Wildcats guard Kobi Simmons would declare for the draft, the school confirmed the news later in the day.

“Kobi Simmons, with the support of his family, has decided to declare for the 2017 NBA Draft,” said head coach Sean Miller in a statement. “All of us here at Arizona thank him for his freshman season and wish him continued success as he pursues his professional career.”

“I have enjoyed my time at Arizona very much,” said Simmons. “I would like to thank my teammates, coaches and our great fans for their support and effort in making my year truly a special one. Bear Down.”

Simmons is the second Arizona player to officially declare for the draft. He will join Lauri Markkanen, who announced his intention to leave after his freshman year last week.

During his only year in an Arizona uniform, Simmons averaged 8.7 points, 1.6 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game. He did start 19 games, and appeared in all 37, though he appeared to fall out of favor late in the season. Over the final seven games of the year, he only played more than six minutes once — the NCAA Tournament first round victory over North Dakota. Prior to Allonzo Trier returning from his PED suspension, Simmons played 30 or minutes on nine separate occasions.

DraftExpress currently projects Simmons to be picked 51st overall by the Denver Nuggets.
