Arizona softball: Katiyana Mauga named Pac-12 Player of the Week, Alyssa Palomino named Pac-12 Freshman of the Week

The wins and accolades continue to pile on for the Wildcats

Arizona softball’s Katiyana Mauga and Alyssa Palomino were named the Pac-12 Player of the Week and Pac-12 Freshman of the Week, respectively, the conference announced Tuesday.

In a week in which the Wildcats went 5-0 with two wins against Grand Canyon and three wins against Cal in Berkeley, Mauga and Palomino led the charge, helping Arizona extend its winning streak to 22 games.

Mauga was 5-for-12 (.417) with two homers, seven RBIs, and five walks during the week. The senior now sits at 79 career home runs, placing her eight homers shy of tying the UA’s school record (held by Stacie Chambers).

Mauga is tied for the team-lead in homers (12) this season with freshman first baseman Jessie Harper.

Palomino, a redshirt freshman who sat out last season with a knee injury, hit .308 with two homers, four extra-base hits, five RBIs, and five runs scored last week. The center fielder leads Arizona in RBIs (42) and is third on the team in home runs (11).

Of the 21 weekly Pac-12 awards that have been handed out this season, nine of them have been received by Arizona Wildcats.

This is Mauga’s second time being the conference’s Player of the Week, and it is the first time Palomino has been recognized.

The Wildcats (37-1, 9-0 Pac-12) will return to action Friday when they will begin a three-game series against the Stanford Cardinal (16-16, 0-6 Pac-12) at Hillenbrand Stadium.

First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. PST.
