Arizona baseball: Wildcats hang tight in national polls

Still right around 7th in everything except RPI

After a 3-1 week and another Pac-12 series victory, the Arizona Wildcats did not move much in any of the national polls after improving to 9-6 in conference play.

The Wildcats jumped up a spot in Baseball America’s rankings, but stayed at 7th in all of the other human polls, and also remained 2nd in the latest RPI behind Oregon State.

Here’s a look at all of the different rankings:

An 18 run outburst against Oregon helped the Wildcats maintain their place among the elite offenses in the country as well. Here’s a sampling of some of the stats they find themselves at or near the top in:

  • Runs per game (1st - 9.0)
  • Batting average (2nd - .332)
  • Doubles (3rd - 90)
  • On-base percentage (5th - .426)
  • Triples (14th - 14)
  • Slugging percentage (16th - .483)

One of the biggest movers in most polls this week was West Virginia, who had a legitimate chance of sweeping then-No. 3 TCU, but still took two-of-three from the Horned Frogs.

Oregon State remains the consensus No. 1 team in the land despite losing a game to Washington on Thursday. The Beavers rebounded for the series win, and now lead the Pac-12 by five games.

Among West Coast teams, Cal State Fullerton and Long Beach State are both highly ranked as well. There is a decent chance of four western regionals this year (Tucson, Corvallis, Fullerton, and Long Beach) if everything holds serve through the final month and a half of the season.

Arizona returns to action on Thursday night when it hosts the Utah Utes for a three-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 6 PM PT on Thursday. All three games will be shown on Pac-12 Network.
