Arizona basketball: Wildcats officially hire Lorenzo Romar as associate head coach

And it’s a done deal

After a couple weeks of it seeming like a done deal, the Arizona Wildcats have officially named Lorenzo Romar as the team’s new associate head coach.

Romar will replace Joe Pasternack, who is the new head coach at UC Santa Barbara.

“It’s an exciting day for Arizona Basketball to be able to welcome Lorenzo Romar and his family to our basketball family,” said head coach Sean Miller in a statement released by the school. “Lorenzo’s accomplishments in this game speak for themselves, including his successful tenure as the head coach at Washington for the last 15 seasons. However, his dedication to his players, passion for this game and impeccable character is what everybody that knows him loves about him. He will no doubt make a significant impact in all aspects of our basketball program as we continue to build and improve in all that we do.”

When Romar was fired by Washington this offseason, that made Miller the longest tenured coach in the Pac-12. Romar has 391 career wins as a head coach over a 21 year career that includes stops at Pepperdine and Saint Louis before going to Seattle.

“Of all the potential opportunities that were out there for me, joining the Arizona program was the one that was the most appealing,” Romar said. “I truly believe Sean Miller is one of the best coaches in America. The opportunity to join him, his staff and the rich tradition of Arizona Basketball is something that I’m extremely excited about.”

Ryan detailed what he believes Romar will bring to the Wildcats in here. The biggest difference between Romar and Miller teams have been offensive tempo, so it will be interesting to see what kind of philosophy Arizona rolls out there with this new hire.

This also seems to have helped keep Allonzo Trier in Tucson.
