Oregon vs. Arizona baseball recap: Wildcats beat Ducks 18-4 to take series

23 hits and another home series win

On a day where fans were given eggs with prizes inside as they walked through the turnstiles, the Arizona Wildcats made their own prize with an 18-4 win over the Oregon Ducks, taking their fourth Pac-12 series and improving to 9-6 in conference play.

The offensive explosion started right away for the Wildcats, picking up five-straight singles to begin the game. It would end up being the fourth time this year that Arizona picked up 20 or more hits in a game.

After going station to station through the first five hits, Cesar Salazar notched a two-run single to make it a 4-0 game.

Oregon got one back in the top half of the second, but the Wildcats responded with another four-run inning. This one was not thanks to singles, it was thanks to a bunch of doubles.

But then Nick Quintana capped it off with a two-run homer just out of the reach of the left fielder.

Arizona was held to a goose egg in the third, and probably should have been in the fourth, but a likely missed call at home resulted in another Quintana RBI and a 9-1 Wildcats lead.

In the fifth, JJ Matijevic picked up his fourth hit of the game, an RBI single to right that plated Rivas.

The game got put totally out of reach in the sixth. After a couple of walks, Cal Stevenson lined a single to right to make it a ten-run lead.

Alfonso Rivas followed this with an RBI single of his own, his fourth hit of the day and the fifth time he was on base.

The Ducks were able to get those two runs back in the seventh though. After a leadoff single by Matthew Dyer, Tim Susnara — who dominated Arizona pitching this weekend — smashed a bomb over the right field fence. It went so far that not a single Arizona defender even bothered moving.

The Ducks scraped another one across off Rio Gomez with two out in the seventh before Tylor Megill came on to finish out the frame.

Gomez, who seems to have solidified himself as the third weekend starter, threw 6 23 innings on Saturday, scattering nine hits and a walk along the way. 55 of his 84 pitches were strikes, and he also picked up 3 Ks.

Even after that three-run seventh for the Ducks, Arizona had to double them up by putting up a six-spot of their own.

Six hits in the inning, including Rivas’ fifth hit of the day, put the Wildcats up 18-4. Jared Oliva also had a two-run double.

Megill would keep Oregon at bay through the eighth. Robby Medel came on to pitch a perfect ninth.

U of A returns to action on Thursday night when they host the Utah Utes to start the second half of Pac-12 play. First pitch is scheduled for 6 PM PT and will be broadcast on Pac-12 Networks.
