Arizona football recruiting: My-King Johnson verbally commits to Wildcats

The Wildcats land one of the top in-state prospects

The Arizona Wildcats are starting to rebound on the football recruiting trail heading into National Signing Day, and have now landed one of the top in-state prospects.

My-King Johnson, a defensive end from Tempe HS, committed to Arizona on Monday afternoon according to Jason Jewell.

Johnson is the 20th-ranked player in the state of Arizona, and is slotted as the 46th-best weakside defensive end in the country.

On January 6th, Johnson actually gave his “soft verbal” commitment to UCLA, leaving the door open for other schools, including Texas A&M. The decision for Johnson to commit to Arizona seems to have occurred because of a home visit with Rich Rodriguez.

"My-King Johnson is a fine young man who is committed in the classroom and is driven to do well and be successful," Tempe coach Brian Walker told AZ Central. "Some college is going to get a great football player. Right now, he's working hard in the weight room and making sure that wherever he ends up, that school will get a quality football player."

According to MaxPreps, Johnson racked up 89 tackles in ten games last year for Tempe. He also had 19 TFLs, 21.5 sacks, three forced fumbles, and a blocked field goal.

This is no doubt a surprise, but a pleasant one for Arizona fans, coaches, and players alike, as seen by these tweets from the coaching staff:
