Arizona football: Donté Williams reportedly accepts offer to join Nebraska Cornhuskers staff

A big blow to the Arizona coaching staff

After just one season with the Arizona Wildcats, cornerback coach Donté Williams has accepted an offer to join the Nebraska Cornhuskers coaching staff as the new cornerbacks coach, according to Ryan Bartow of 247 Sports.

Rumors began on Friday after Rivals Nebraska affiliate Huskersonline.com reported that Nebraska was closing in on a deal to have Williams join the program.

The position includes a significant pay raise. Williams was paid $215,000 by Arizona for the 2016 season, and only one Nebraska assistant currently makes less than $300,000 annually. Current Husker corners coach Brian Stewart reportedly made $425,000 in 2016.

This is a huge blow both on and off the field for the Wildcats. Before Arizona, Williams was at San Jose State, where he coached the No. 1 and No. 2 passing defenses in the 2014 and 2015 seasons respectively. This season, he was grooming junior college transfer Dane Cruikshank and sophomore Jace Whittaker as the leading corners.

But Williams is most known for his recruiting ties in the Los Angeles area. Countless recruits know of Williams and have nothing but great things to say about him. He has played a major role in pulling together the 2017 recruiting class, which is currently ranked No. 20 in the nation.

He was the lead recruiter for many commits in this class, and was helping Arizona close in on some of the most highly-touted recruits in the nation to end the class. Many commits have said that they committed because of Donté Williams.

Now we wait to see what the fallout is.
