Arizona football: Greg Byrne publicly voices support for Rich Rodriguez
This is what we all knew was coming
As the Arizona Wildcats embark on what is probably the most important offseason of the Rich Rodriguez era, we know one thing, and that is that Rodriguez will not be fired.
Greg Byrne, who has publicly supported Rodriguez on a few occasions this season, did so again in the university’s weekly Wildcat Wednesday email.
In it, Byrne writes:
As you could see on Friday night, our staff and student-athletes never stopped working and produced one of their best efforts against our rivals. We set a school rushing record with 511 yards and posted three 100-yard rushers for just the second time in school history (B. Dawkins, 184 yds; S. Grant, 176 yds; Z. Green, 126 yds). We believe this effort shows promise for the future and we’re fully supportive of Coach Rodriguez, his staff and the young men in our program, not to mention what appears to be a talented group of newcomers that will join the program heading into next season.
“Fully supportive of Coach Rodriguez”...that’s all you really need to know.
Arizona went 3-9 this season, and its lone conference win came in the season finale against rival Arizona State.
We’ve already seen a report that offensive line coach Jim Michalczik may have a job offer at Fresno State from his old colleague Jeff Tedford. There may also be other changes made to the assistant coaching staff as the Wildcats look to return to their 2014 Pac-12 South Champion ways.
If Arizona were to have another season like this one next year, then you’d think Rodriguez’s job will be in serious jeopardy. But for right now, he will get the chance to turn things around in 2017.
