Arizona volleyball: Wildcats sweep Cleveland State, advance to second round of the NCAA Tournament

The Wildcats will play for a Sweet Sixteen berth on Saturday

The Arizona volleyball team beat Cleveland State in three sets to advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday in East Lansing, Michigan.

This is the fourth year in a row Arizona has made the NCAA Tournament, and it’s the third time it has made it into the second round since 2013.

The Wildcats dominated the Vikings in all three sets, winning the first set 25-14, the second set 25-17, and the final set 25-13.

Kalei Mau, a member of the All-Pac-12 team, had a game-high 17 kills, while Devyn Cross added 10.

Penina Snuka, who was the Pac-12 Setter of the Year and also a member of the All-Pac-12 team this season, had a game-high 15 assists and 13 digs. Snuka led the Pac-12 in assists this season for the second straight year, tallying 1,307 on the season.

Laura Larson added 12 digs, while Katarina Pilepic and Kendra Dahlke had nine and seven kills, respectively.

Arizona will play the winner of Michigan State/Fairfield on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. MST with a trip to the Sweet Sixteen at stake. Michigan State is the No. 9 overall seed.

Arizona has not reached the Sweet Sixteen since 2005. The Wildcats are 19-14 this season and finished eighth in the Pac-12 with a 10-10 conference record.
