Pac-12 Roundup: Conference defined by close games and blowouts in Week Six

Who will start to take control of the South?

If you were involved in a Pac-12 game on Saturday, chances are you were either in a blowout, or in a game that came down to the last play.

The exception to that rule was the Arizona Wildcats keeping the Utah Utes within two touchdowns at the end of the game.

USC 21 - Colorado 17

Adoree’ Jackson won this game for the Trojans. His plays in the return game and on defense allowed USC to give the Buffs their first conference loss of the season. Jackson had a 38-yard kick return, a 47-yard punt return, and a crucial interception to go with six tackles.

USC’s second touchdown of the game had so many things wrong with it that it felt so right. Then at the end of the game, JuJu Smith-Schuster went down heading toward the endzone at the end of the game to lock up the four-point win.

Washington 70 - Oregon 21

Woof....in all ways possible.

For the first time in over a decade, the Huskies beat the Ducks in a football contest. The Webfoots were not dressed for success in this one.

Jake Browning went 22/28 in his first game at Autzen, racking up 304 yards and six (!) passing touchdowns. That’s a new school record, and he actually had eight total touchdowns thanks to a couple of rushing scores.

Oregon started true freshman Justin Herbert for the first time, and looking at the box score, he wasn’t awful, finishing 21/34 for 179 yards, two TDs, and a pick. But when your counterpart scores eight times, you’re in a bit of trouble.

Washington State 42 - Stanford 16

The other blowout of the week was a very surprising one as the Coug train rolled into Palo Alto and completely shut down the Cardinal. Christian McCaffrey only managed 35 rushing yards and a five-yard reception, plus he failed to find the endzone.

Luke Falk carved up the Stanford secondary to the tune of 357 yards and four touchdowns, two of those scores to Tavares Martin Jr. Don’t look now, but after struggling at the start of the year, WSU is right back in the mix.

Oregon State 47 - Cal 44 (OT)

This was the beginning of a fun night. The result of this game also made it that every team in the Pac-12 has a conference win now except for the two teams that won their divisions in 2014.

The Beavers actually led this game 34-17 after three quarters, but Cal made a late run capped with a last-second field goal to send this game to overtime.

But the Bears kicked another field goal in overtime, and Oregon State answered back with an easy touchdown to win the game and notch their first conference victory since a 35-27 win over then-No. 6 ASU in 2014. I was on Mill the night of that game for a bachelor party, and I will treasure that game for the rest of my life.

ASU 23 - UCLA 20

Much like Arizona, ASU has suffered a couple of injuries at quarterback, and had to burn the redshirt of true freshman Dillon Sterling-Cole when Brady White went down in this one. Wide receiver Jalen Harvey also threw a couple of passes, so that’s fun.

Josh Rosen also suffered an injury on the UCLA side of the game, which brought in Mike Fafaul for the final drive. That final drive went sack-sack-interception, which is not ideal if you were rooting for the Bruins in this one.

The big thing that came out of this matchup was Zane Gonzalez becoming the new NCAA all-time career leader in field goals made.
