Kyle Whittingham calls out Arizona’s defense in postgame interview

What’s really going on with the Wildcats’ defensive line?

One of the pleasant surprises for the Arizona Wildcats this year has been the play of the defensive line.

On Saturday night, shifting and movement up front appeared to be responsible for eight false starts by the Utah Utes, but maybe there was something else going on as Kyle Whittingham accused after the game.

“We changed the snap count,” Whittingham says in the video. “They (Arizona) were screaming go when they moved the front and it was screwing up our cadence.”

This isn’t the first time that this has happened with Arizona this year. However, at the beginning of the Grambling State game, the Wildcats were called for defensive delay of game penalties rather than the offense getting called for false starts.

“It’s supposed to be illegal,” Whittingham continued. “Unless all five of our offensive linemen are lying, they were saying go, so we’ll have to give ‘em lie detector tests I guess.”

Would I be surprised if this is actually happening? No. I think the Grambling game is enough proof of that. The Pac-12 refs need to learn the rules a little better, like when offensive holding happens in the endzone, it’s a safety.

Those false start penalties kept Arizona in front of Utah for the first half, but once the Utes changed up their snap count, the Wildcats were unable to stop them, and did not benefit from a string of false start penalties either.

Anyway, Whittingham was not the only head coach in this game that was not pleased afterwards.
