Arizona basketball: Wildcats to participate in the 2018 Maui Invitational along with Duke, Gonzaga, Illinois and others

It’s apparently the strongest field in history

The Arizona Wildcats will be one of eight Division 1 schools participating in the 2018 Maui Jim Maui Invitational, Maui Jim Maui Invitational Tournament Chairman Dave Odom announced Wednesday in a press release.

Duke, Illinois, Xavier, Gonzaga, Iowa State, San Diego State, and Auburn are the other D1 schools competing.

“Our fields always showcase the best in college basketball, and 2018 will be as strong as we’ve ever had,” Odom said in the release.

The games will be played Nov. 19-21 at the Lahaina Civic Center in Maui, and all will be televised on ESPN.

Tournament host Chaminade University will play on the mainland instead of in Maui for the first time, Odom said.

“The 2018 event represents the first time in Tournament history that eight Division I teams take the floor on Maui, a format which will continue in the following alternating years (2018, 2020, 2022 and beyond),” the release states. “Chaminade, which has hosted the Tournament since its founding and produced national headlines following upset wins, will continue to host and compete in the Opening Round on the mainland during those years. For 2019 and the following alternating years, Chaminade will compete in the Championship Round on Maui.”

This will be Arizona’s seventh appearance in the Maui Invitational, with the last appearance taking place in 2014, when the Wildcats took home the trophy against San Diego State.

Arizona also won the Maui Invitational in 2000.
