Arizona Tuesday Twitterbag: On Wildcats’ offense and QB situation
The obvious questions about Arizona’s offense are headed our way this week
It’s Tuesday, which means it’s time to take on your burning Twitter questions.
When watching the Arizona Wildcats lose to the BYU Cougars on Saturday, the thing that stuck out to everyone was the poor offensive play. After an offseason filled with “QB competition” talk, it was probably fair to wonder why Anu Solomon stayed in the entire game.
Not surprisingly, a lot of the questions we got this week were on that topic, so let’s get to it. As always, follow us @azdesertswarm and tweet us your questions each Monday night/Tuesday morning to be featured here.
@azdesertswarm if we have jerrard randall from last yr to come in on certain situations do we win that game?

This is why I was legitimately surprised Brandon Dawkins didn’t play on Saturday. Rich Rodriguez had no problem going to Jerrard Randall in last year’s Colorado game, and that decision gave the Wildcats a victory. Rodriguez also had no problem yanking Randall in favor of Dawkins against ASU, and that move certainly gave Arizona a better chance of winning that game.
I feel safe saying that Dawkins is better than Randall. Is he as fast? No. But is he a better overall option at quarterback? Yes. If Rich pulls the trigger and goes to Dawkins to start the second half, or at the very least two drives into the third quarter, does Arizona beat BYU? We’ll never know, but I was expecting the change at QB to happen. It just never did.
@azdesertswarm does RR get back to basics and rediscover the read option? #RunTheBall

Arizona needs to run the ball more. I hope we can all agree on that. There were only 19 rushes by running backs on Saturday, 17 of them from Nick Wilson. And it’s not like the Wildcats were down huge in this game. BYU never led by more than nine. There was no reason to get away from the running game so much. I hope that Arizona becomes a run-first team again these next couple weeks. That’s where the best players on this offense are, and they need to be used more.
@azdesertswarm why does Anu continue to take double digit yard sacks instead of throwing it away? 26 starts. He should know better
— azcat92 (@azcat92) September 6, 2016
I lol’d when I read this question. I wish I had an answer for you. It also seems to be worse in Glendale for whatever reason. It is astonishing that it doesn’t really feel like Anu has progressed over the course of his now 2+ years as a starting quarterback. Is it on the offensive line? Kind of. But this is 26 starts now and there are still the same issues.
@azdesertswarm How would you grade the week 1 performances of the O-Line and D-Lines respectively?
— Dragon Slayer (@coach_kain) September 6, 2016
Well, I put out grades the morning after the game. The offensive line got an F, and the defensive line got a B. I think the reasons are pretty obvious.
@azdesertswarm Does Sean Miller finally have the team to get to final 4? Or is he still lacking that elite shooter?
— Z (@Writingez99) September 6, 2016
No, this team will not get to the Final Four. If it runs into a team with a decent center in the NCAA Tournament, it will lose. I don’t know about lacking an elite shooter (I will always be a huge believer in the Lauri Markkanen hype until further notice). I don’t think this is a Final Four team though. Not without Terrance Ferguson.
